The Great Gatsby Chapter Analysis Paper Nick observes several drunken women at Gatsby lawn, gossiping about the mysterious identity and unusual rumors of Gatsby. Gatsby invites Nick forever lunch and they go on a ride to the city in Gatsby white Rolls Royce. On their way to the city, Gatsby tells Nick about his past. Gatsby shows Nick his war medal to prove his claims. He informs Nick to expect a story about his tragedy which he will tell him about later this afternoon. As they drive, Gatsby does not pay attention to the speed limit and an officer pulls them over. Gatsby shows the officer a small white card from the commissioner. Wolfishly describes Gatsby to Nick as a man Of fine breeding (p. 46 1 993 edition) who would never so much as look at a friends wife? (p. 47 1993 edition). Jordan tells Nick, that Gatsby requested him to invite Daisy to his house for tea. Gatsby will suddenly arrive, so she could see him, even though he fears that she doesnt want to. Analysis Thesis Statement: Through the use of flashbacks Fitzgerald unfolds the mysterious identity of Jay Gatsby. At first the author portrays Gatsby as an untrustworthy, suspicious man, who is involved in criminal activity of bootlegging. However after Cordons story of Gatsby past, there is a major heft in his identity and his true character is revealed. Nick realizes that Gatsby has accumulated this wealth and all his possessions to win the love of Daisy. Chapter 4 opens up with a portrayal of The Roaring Twenties and its dynamic lifestyle. Nicks description of Gatsby guests shows the different roles and classes of the society, during 1922. Nick outlines how they are all just using Gatsby for his hospitality and wealth. The author achieves this theme through Nicks list the guests who attended the parties: Chester Backers and the Leeches, and a man named Bunsen (p. 1 993 edition) and the fact that none of the guests knew anything about the host. They arrived at Gatsby mansion with the intention to enjoy their time, consume alcohol and display their wealth, thereby portraying the main concept of the fast paced life of the Roaring Twenties. At the beginning of the chapter, the author foreshadows Gatsby s connection to the criminal world by the chatter of the young ladies at the party. The rumors about Gatsby that are overheard from the m: He is a bootlegger One time he killed a man who had found that he was a nephew o Von Hindering (p. 9 1 993 edition), cause the reader to be suspicious of Gatsby character and provide an indication that he is not a clean person. The rumors reveal a minor element Of Gatsby identity and the immoral way he gained his wealth, giving a sign to the reader of what to expect further in the chapter. Another portrayal of the Roaring Twenties appears when Gatsby pays no attention to the speed limit and an officer pulls him over. Gatsby shows the white card he had received from the commissioner, due to a favor he had previously done for him. The officer apologizes, Know you next time Mr.. Gatsby. Excuse me! (p. 44 1993 edition) and lets him go. Gatsby action of simply waving a small white card to escape the consequences of breaking a law shows that he is a superstar. Gatsby acts above the law and the police, displaying himself as the New Money of the Roaring Twenties and that there are no boundaries to his actions. When Meyer Wolfishly is introduced in the chapter; Nicks awareness of the criminal side to Gatsby s character increases. Throughout the conversation Nick suspects that the rumors he had revisions heard from the young ladies hes a bootlegger One time he killed a man ) (p. 9 1993 edition) are true and that Gatsby is involved in organized crime. In the chapter, Wolfishly serves as symbol to represent the Criminal Element. The way that Fitzgerald describes the visual characteristics of Wolfishly A small, flat nosed Jew raised his large head and regarded me with two fine growths of hair which luxuriated in either nostril. After a moment I discovered his tiny eyes in th e half-darkness (p. 44-45 1993 edition), generates a stereotype of the Jewish nation. During the 1 sass, Jews were hardwired for their greed, wealth and physical attributes of a miniature body build a large nose. Fitzgerald applies the stereotype to describe Wolfishly as a symbol for Crime and Corruption. Meyer Wolfishly describes the success in wealth as an outcome of fine breeding (p. 46 1 993 edition). This is the Old Money way of thinking, where the fundamentals to achieving The American Dream of wealth lie in the genes of the person. After the meeting with Wolfishly, Nick realizes that the source to Gatsby high income is his involvement in bootlegging activities. Gatsby is the New Money lass of The Roaring Twenties, who has recently acquired his fortune of wealth, instead of inheriting it. Throughout the mid-section of the chapter Fitzgerald begins to unfold the mysteries of Jay Gatsby past, revealing his true identity and creating a major shift of Gatsby character. At the beginning of the chapter the author characterizes Gatsby as enigmatic, suspicious and not fully trustworthy person. The information Gatsby gives about his past seems highly over exaggerated and inconceivable; l am the son of wealthy people in the Middle West -all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. (p. 42 1993 edition). Gatsby portrays himself as a son of wealthy parents, war hero, jewel collector and a graduate of oxford. Later on, Cordons story about Gatsby past radically changes Nicks perception of Gatsby character. Through the use of flash backs, Jordan depicts Gatsby as a romantic person who is fighting to achieve his love. Jordan reveals his lower class background, what influenced Daisys parents to oppos e the marriage; but Gatsby is a man who is prepared to go beyond the boundaries to reach his goal. Through Cordons flashbacks of Gatsby, Fitzgerald presents a romantic click, where Gatsby is the Romeo of The Roaring Twenties: a perfect lover, brave and handsome, and war hero. The end of Chapter 4 reveals the true objective to Gatsby accomplishment of his wealth. Gatsby desire to reach the mysterious green light and Daisy across the bay is unstoppable. The green light acts as a symbol to several themes, among them is Daisy herself, Gatsby fearless romantic optimism and Gatsby s view of the American Dream.

The Blind Side Essays

The Blind Side Essays The Blind Side Paper The Blind Side Paper The OTOH)/s provided Michael not only with a home and a kind loving family, but as well as a tutor to help him get he grades he needed to become eligible for the NCAA Divisions athletic scholarship (Hancock, 2009). Brotherlinesss study on the Ecological Theory says that the Microsystems is interpersonal relationships that are experienced by the person in a person-to-person setting where they interact with the individual on a daily basis (Frontbencher, IS. , 1997, p. 39). In this movie the 2 main contexts that help shape Michaels development through the rest of his adolescents is his adoptive family and his teachers and coach at school. These two contexts mix into the category, which Frontbencher considered he Microsystems as they in relation to Michael, shape the other as Michaels education improved greatly due to the support form his adoptive family. In Kathy Winters study she measured the levels which students motivation was involved with the teachers dimensions (Went, K. , 2002, p. 290). In relation to The Blind Side, Michaels teacher Mrs.. Smith was the only one who first felt the need that she could help Michael understand the material and excel better in school. She was the teacher who had gotten the majority of the teachers on board with the way she found that Michael was best able to empowered the material learned in class and which method turned out best when testing him on it. Ecological Theory The Ecological Theory is Erie Brotherlinesss view on adolescent development that focuses on the ways our social settings interact to help direct out development (McMahon Thompson, 201 5, p. 30). The Ecological Theory is made up of 5 systems, the Microsystems, Microsystems, ecosystem, Microsystems and the chronometers (Clemson, 2014, September, 9). The Microsystems is made up of individuals immediate settings; meaning their family, school, peer group, and workplace. This system has the most influence on an adolescent when growing up, as theyre the people and things that they interact with face to face, on a regular basis (Frontbencher, IS. , 1 997, p. 39). The Microsystems is the link between contexts in the Microsystems (Frontbencher, U. , 1 997, p 40) and as said before, in this movie the link is Michaels family and his schooling. A study done by Epstein (AAA, 1 Bibb) was conducted on the developmental outcome of communication between parents and teachers. It had been found that the effects of family and school ere larger than those concerning socioeconomic status or the race of students (Frontbencher, U. , 1997, p. 40). Michaels adoptive mother, Leigh Anne Tooth seen Michael walking down the road out in the cold one night, and insisted that he come stay at her house if he had no other place to go. She took charge in his life once he developed into the family instead of becoming just a guest in their home. She had bought Mike new clothes that he liked, as in the scene where theyre in a store Mike had shopped in before she told him pick out whatever you think youll wear and Ill buy it. When Mrs.. Tooth found out that Mike scored in the 98th percentile in protective instincts she figured it would be a good idea to get Michael into football to help channel his skill. When Michael finally understood the game, and big league coaches were scouting Michael, Mrs.. Tooth took it into her own hands to get Michael a tuition tutor to help him get the GAP he needed to get into the colleges that he could play in. The way Michael looked on life was greatly influenced by his mother Denies Oer. When shed shoot up some form of drug when he was a child, shed tell him to close his eyes so he wouldnt tenets it. After she was finished shed count to 3 and tell Michael to open his eyes and tell him the past is gone, the world is a good place and its all going to be okay. this later cam into play when Michael got into a fight with the leader of the tough guys from Hurt Village, and Michael got up and left the scene before anything escalated. Sean Junior Tooth (S. J. ) is the biggest factor in Michaels development as he was the one person who looked up to Michael the most. From day one before Michael was even brought into the Tooth home, S. J. Was friendly to Michael when no one else was. On one of Mikes first days of school, he approached two little girls on the playground to just say hi to them and they ran off scared by him. S. J. Came over to Mike and told him that Smile at me, it lets them know youre their friend. When the Typhus took Michael in, S. J. Took to Michael right away treating him like he was the big brother that he never had. When Mike was tying to understand the game of football, S. J. Was the one who took the time to make him understand it and helped him train outside of football practices, encouraging Mike every step of he way, making it fun for the two of them. Teachers Expectations of Students In the school aspect of Michaels life, it became the one thing he striver for. Without school, he wouldnt be able to enjoy the football career he later succeeded. The help of Michaels future Coach, Coach Cotton, is what got him into Winning Christian School; he had shown great interest in Michaels athletic abilities. From there on once he was accepted into the school, none of the teachers really seemed interested in helping Michael with the materials they were teaching they all assumed he was a lost cause. In the study done by Kathy Went, she focused on many issues that were regarding colonization skills and school-related adjustment. Went hypothesized that students would identify the extent to which teachers interests in what they were teaching would help motivate students and their adjustment to school. The models that Went used for this study were subject matter and communicate aspects of control, maturity demands, democratic communication, and nurture (Went, K. R. , 2002, p. 289). The findings in this study were that teachers, just like parents can be characterized with the colonization context in which they build for their students. Went also found that in the middle school classes, few students had described their teachers ad a friend or as a close relationship with them. But most of the students could recognize their teachers behave in the way that they care and can give personal support to the students. These positive outlook on teachers from the students, engaged them to have more interest in activities done in class (Went, K. R. , 2002, p. 297). Regarding this study, Mrs.. Smith who was he teacher that first realized that Michael is actually learning things, went about testing Michael in a different way that the rest of the students were tested. She gave Michael the tests orally and discovered that he was actually learning the materials. Once she shared this information with the other teachers they themselves become on board and helped Michael in the way that benefited him. With this encouragement and interest in Michael he himself excelled more to the best of his ability. When Michael was scouted for professional football teams, the Typhus realized he needed to come up room a 1. 6 GAP to a 2. 5 GAP and the only way they thought this was possible was to get Michael a private tuition tutor, Miss Sue. Miss Sue has such an interest in Michael as he had the potential to play for her own team, who was the same as the Touchy, Ole Miss. She spent hours working with Michael to help him bring his grades up to standard to be eligible to win the NCAA Divisions at hletic scholarship. Conclusion Michael was reformed when he entered the Tooth family; he had a completely different lifestyle than the one he had always known. His major influences were his family (Tooth family) and his schooling (Winning Christian School) and these both fall into the Microsystems form Brotherlinesss Ecological Theory. Both of these contexts are in the Microsystems because they both are interactions that Michael had to come face to face with everyday and generally what the whole movie was about. Without his family Michael wouldnt have had the opportunities that he had when he was brought into the Tooth family as they helped push him to shape himself. Along with this are the teachers from Winning Christian School, especially Mrs.. Smith who helped Michael learn and understand the materials in a different way that the teachers taught in school. Together, both of these contexts then fall into the Microsystems of the theory as they both link together in Michaels life, influencing the other. Without Michaels enrolment at the school, he more than likely wouldnt have met the Tooth family and without the Tooth family Michael wouldnt have found the encouragement to play football and excel his grades in school to make him into something. The teachers influence on Michael was incredible, as well as his help from Miss. Sue. The teachers focused on ways to help Michael understand what they were teaching in school and without this interest in Michael, he himself wouldnt have been encouraged to learn or even want to continue with school as he had no understand of any of it with no previous knowledge as every public school he attended the teachers failed him to pass him off to somebody else. With the encouragement from his teachers Michaels grades bumped up from Ads and Ifs to Cos and higher. As well as Michaels time with Miss. Sue who tutored Michael his last year in high school to dramatically ring his GAP from a low standard to what it needed to be to be able to achieve a scholarship. She showed great interest in Michael as when he was about to give up hope on himself, she jumped in and gave him more hope. When it came to write a final paper that would determine his final GAP she put all of her interest in Michael by helping him choose a topic that he himself was interested in and knew he could write beautifully. In relation to The Blind Side, Michael fit into Freeborn nerds Theory exceptionally well as he is the perfect example of both the Microsystems and the Microsystems at work. Without his interactions between the contexts describe, Michaels life wouldnt have went any where, as no one would accept him.

In what ways does a consideration of interdependence challenge the Essay

In what ways does a consideration of interdependence challenge the realist analysis of the prospects for international co-operation in pursuit of absolute gains - Essay Example The very fact that a new world order has emerged following the collapse of Soviet Union in particular and the Communist Bloc in general demands a shift in our focus of attention while analysing the interactions of the states. The very nature of nation-states itself has profoundly changed. The mutations on sovereignty of nation-states, which are caused by neoliberal globalisation, are unprecedented and apparently irreversible. New institutions have emerged at the international level and they exert greater influence over the policy formulations even by the nation-states that are marginally integrated to the world market. Tradionally, the international system has been indeed seen as a world of sovereign states. States have the monopoly of power within a given territory and claim to represent the interests of the subjects of its rule. A state is primary unit at the international level. Constitutional independence is a defining character of a legitimate state. All states are considered equal in front of the international law. As opposed to the theoretical situation, we can see that the interactions between and among the states at the international level do involves relations of power. Many theorists of international politics have observed that powerful states are able to incorporate their desired ends to the international laws and mobilise what they want from the other states that have lesser resources. The very conception of political is different for realism and liberalism. The political is conceived as the means to certain ideals in liberal theory such as democracy and liberty. Antagonistically, realism sees politics as characterised by conflict. Realism is also known as political realism. Classical realism, neorealism and neoclassical realism are the major varieties of realist thinking. On the other hand, liberal

Eastman Kodak Products

Eastman Kodak Products External analysis of Eastman Kodak Introduction Kodak is the market leader in providing photographic products and services to consumers and commercial customers around the globe for memories, entertainment and information. The company brings inventive and modern products to the market that allows people to take, make and share pictures and experience the magic of photography (History of Kodak, 2008). As the world leader, Eastman Kodak is always looking for talented people. Kodak has continued to expand the ways and images touch peoples daily lives. Kodak is a top supplier of innovative solutions for digital, conventional and blended print production environment (History of Kodak, 2008). Eastman Kodak Company is an American multinational public company which produces imaging and photographic materials and equipment. It is known for its extensive variety of pictorial film products. Eastman Kodak is actually concentrating on two major markets; the first is digital photography and the second is digital printing (About Kodaks Graphic Communications Group, 2008). In Rochester and Jamestown New York, Kodak was founded by George Eastman and businessman Henry Strong. George Eastman as president purchased the stock of American Aristotype Company. In the year 1982, the Eastman Kodak Company was founded. The company is incorporated in New Jersey but has its offices in Rochester, New York. The slogan, You press the button; we do the rest, was given by the founder of the company, George Eastman (About Kodaks Graphic Communications Group, 2008). External analysis of Eastman Kodak Porters five forces Model According to Michael porter, an authority on competitive strategy contends that a corporation is most concerned with the intensity of competition within its industry. The level of this intensity is determined by basic competitive forces like potential entrants, suppliers, buyers and substitutes available. Using this model a high force can be regarded as a threat because it is likely to reduce profits and a low force can be viewed as an opportunity because it may allow company to earn profit. Analysis of Kodak on the basis of Porters Five Force model: Threats of new entrants: In recent years, the growing demand of digital cameras has been attracting many new comers, domestically as well as internationally. The threats of new entrant are always an issue when dealing with new technology. Often, new technology is developed by an individual looking for a better way to do something. These companies are expected to drastically alter the Kodak Companys structure with their technology, scale of operations and brand power. With Xerox, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Sony, Cannon and other major companies has already established in the market, it will be easy for new companies to enter the market and make a substantial impact. Bargaining power of customers: In the camera industry, the bargaining power of customer is relatively limited. Eastman Kodak is entering the consumer printer market which is full of competitors who produce products that allow the consumer to have significant buying power. From the sale of replacement cartridges, most producers rely on their profit margins. The buyers have a lot of power, with the companies producing quality printers at extremely reasonable values and often providing significant discounts. Eastman Kodak is responsive to this and they are launching their product into the consumer printer market. They are also making a play in the commercial printing market where the bargaining power of the buyer is not immense. Bargaining power of suppliers: The bargaining power of suppliers to Eastman Kodak is more significant than its rivals who expand and manufacture their own parts. Eastman Kodak should develop its printers, by using off the projection parts, as to get its printers on the market quicker. Rather than trying to plan everything from scratch, the Kodak Eastman should work with technology partners like SigmaTel, Inc. a chip-design specialist (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). This approach will allow the Kodak to develop faster and lower the expansion costs. The confidence for producing the parts of the printers gives the suppliers greater buying power (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). As compared to the traditional manufacturing, in the market that expanding and producing own parts may be risky in the long run risky and could pay off for Kodak. Threat of substitutes: Eastman Kodak cannot overlook the manufacturing and launching of their new consumer inkjet printers. Where on the other side, the competitors of company like H-P, Sony, Cannon and Lexmark are relying not on the turnover margin from the printer and handy cameras but they are emphasizing on the profit margin on replacing the cartridges. Eastman Kodak is marketing a quality printer, affordable cartridges, and quality paper combination to produce the highest quality prints (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The concern of the Kodak should be same as HP, Lexmark, and Epson. The emphasis of the major producers of consumer printers should be that the generic replacement cartridges and ink refill market is very strong whereas the cartridges may not produce the same quality as the name brand. The quality differentiation is not adequate to force customers from brand name to general (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). Rivalry among competitors: Rivalry among competitors could be the most significant in the Eastman Kodak. Change is rapid and fuming, with the new technology. The bundling of printers with the computers, discounts, and rebates makes this market extremely competitive (Symonds, 2006). Antonio Perez CEO of Eastman Kodak says that he has no individual rivalry with HP, but the fact is that during his 25 successful years at HP, he organized the explosive growth of HPs printer business. HP Company invests nearly $1 billion a year on research and development of printer (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). Industry forecaster anticipates HP to sit back and observe till Kodaks new equipments get grip. It is important to look at the political, economic, social, and technological components of the macro-environment, while examining the macro environment. In relation to political issues, Kodak is on par with its competitors (Symonds, 2006). To all the key competitors in the digital printing industry, social and employment legislation, tax policy, the directive and de-regulation trends and trade and tariff controls, and environmental and consumer-protection legislation applies equally (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). Economic factors that must be considered by the Kodak are rate of inflation, tax rates, capital markets and the stage of the business cycle. Eastman Kodak is a well recognized company, with the declining importance on film and an enlarged importance on digital printing; the company is behind the influence curve of their well-known competitors (Symonds, 2006). The other economical issues that Kodak must keep in mind are disposable income, GDP trends, purchasing power and wages/ price control (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). Another economic issue is cost of labor. Kodak has moved much of its labor to Mexico, this can cause decline in the sale as the company concentrates on moving labor outside of the U.S (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The political environment exercises great impact on industry and business. The political factors that Kodak must keep in view are antitrust regulations, environmental protection laws, tax laws, political stability, foreign trade regulations and stability of government. The social considerations in the macro environment of Eastman Kodak are population profiles, public opinion, and cultural changes (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). The social factors which should be kept in view are lifestyle changes, rate of family formation, growth rate f population, age distribution of population. Another significant factors related to social consideration is opinion of public. In the case of Kodak, there are significant issues such as accusations of irresponsible environmental practices due to excessive pollution in the Rochester, NY area (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The technological environment will play a key role in the future of Kodak. The company should emphasize on the new development in technology transfer from lab to marketplace. The company should emphasis on the internet availability, telecommunication infrastructure. Kodak should mainly concentrate on the research and development areas (Hunger Wheelen, 2001). For this, it is important that the research is well led and established with detailed visions and goals. Kodak should enlarge and produce the large number of parts as opposed to other competitors, to be developed and manufactured internally. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that the Kodak has the opportunity to be a leading player in the market of digital printing. The Company should carry on with their existing vision to produce printers and cameras that generate the highest quality of prints and construct the printer reasonably priced so as the average consumer afford it to buy (Hunger Wheelen, 2001). With this, the company should persist to expand the latest equipment for the profitable printing market and should try to merge flexibility, speed and quality with each other. To gain the market share, the most essential thing that the company should do is repetitively appraise their actions and procedure to make sure that they are right way. All the most it is important for the members of company to follow the lead of CEO, Antonio Perez. It is necessary that the strategies are timely formulated and implemented and processed forward with research, development, and implementation of new products (Hunger Wheelen, 2001). The Qualities of Hero

Chris McClendon 12/11/09 3rd Hour The Qualities of Hero What makes Annie Sullivan significant? The traits that she showed in The Miracle Worker by William Gibson made her significant. In this story she showed many characteristics that make her unique in comparison to other teachers. Being half blind herself, she could relate to Helen in some ways. Annie Sullivan exemplified many heroic qualities such as patience, perseverance, and self-determination. First, Annie Sullivan showed patience in many different situations throughout the story.Patience appeared in this play when Annie requested to stay with Helen, alone in the cabin for two weeks. She stated, â€Å"Two weeks, for only one miracle. † (Act II). Helen tested Annie’s patience when choosing not to cooperate with her. They got into many altercations, but still remained patient. Helen benefited the most from Annie’s perseverance. Sullivan’s patience helped her to teach Helen. When Helen tested Annieâ₠¬â„¢s patience, she remained calm and continued to tolerate Helen’s behavior. This example shows how Annie exemplified patience in â€Å"The Miracle Worker†.Another characteristic that Annie showed in this story included perseverance. Annie persevered during the scene where she tried to teach Helen how to fold the napkin. When she started, Helen did not seem to respond to sign language or folding the napkin. After a few days, she appeared hopeless to her parents. Sullivan still continued to try and teach her through all the obstacles, even when the Kellers wanted her to leave. â€Å"The room’s a wreck, but her napkin is folded. † (Act II). Annie stated this after she successfully taught Helen how to fold a napkin.Even though the Kellers didn’t believe in Annie, and Helen seemed to not respond to her teaching, Annie still continued to try and teach her. Clearly, Annie Sullivan showed perseverance in this story. Lastly, Sullivan showed the quality of self-determination. Annie showed self-sufficiency throughout the whole play. A specific example would be when the Kellers thought that Annie would give up, but she didn’t. â€Å"Here, give up, why I only today saw what has to be done, to begin! † (Act II). Annie said this to the Kellers when they thought that she might have given up.Sullivan was determined to teach Helen sign language. She remained persistent and did not give up. At this point Annie would do whatever she had to do to teach Helen sign language. She wanted to stay alone in the cabin with Helen even though the Kellers opposed. This self-determination helped Helen to learn and to pay more attention to Annie. This is how Annie Sullivan showed self-determination. In conclusion, Annie Sullivan illuminated many qualities that would make one see her as heroic. Three specific examples of these traits are patience, perseverance, and self-determination.Sullivan shows these characteristics throughout the entire pl ay. The world would be a better place if there more people showed the traits that Annie Sullivan did. I agree with Robert Brustein when he states, â€Å"Gibson possesses substantial literary and dramatic gifts and an integrity of the highest order. In addition, he brings to his works authentic compassion, wit, bite and humor, and a lively, literate prose style equaled by few American dramatists. † in the New Republic. When William Gibson wrote this play he used much compassion and drama. Lastly, I am grateful for being able to read this transcendental play.
